Siobhan McLaughlin

Working with remnant textiles and gathered earth pigments, Siobhan’s practice connects experiences of the landscape layered with memories and connections to people, the body, and time. Exploring themes of place and sustainability she considers how past activities leave impressions on our ecologies.

Siobhan’s practice starts by walking: slowing down to encounter the nuances of landscape, gathering spectrums of site-specific colours affected by light, weather and time. She prioritises care while gathering earth to grind into pigment, connecting to an ancient form of paint-making. Remnant materials – an old fisherman’s smock, childhood bedroom curtains – are gathered and sewn to create a patchwork canvas for painting, printmaking and installation.

The gathering of these materials is important, from the landscapes she walks in and communities she meets, sewing the stories, histories and acts of care in these textiles into the landscape of the painting. By using a material palette so rooted in body and place, the work asks “what do we see when we slow down and how can this help us care for our land and each other?”
